How Does UV Light Photo-Catalytic Oxidation (PCO) Air Purification System Work?

Indoor air can be more polluted than outdoor air, filled with allergens, VOCs, bacteria, and viruses. UV Light Photo-Catalytic Oxidation (PCO) technology is one of the most effective solutions available to clean the air you breathe. This advanced purification process uses UV light and a catalyst to break down pollutants at a molecular level — leaving your home’s air fresher, cleaner, and healthier.

How UV Light Photo-Catalytic Oxidation Works

PCO systems combine ultraviolet light with a catalyst, typically titanium dioxide (TiO₂). When the UV light activates the catalyst, it triggers a powerful photo-oxidation reaction. This process breaks down airborne contaminants — including bacteria, mold spores, viruses, and volatile organic compounds — into harmless water vapor and carbon dioxide.

Unlike standard filtration, which only captures particles, PCO technology actually destroys pollutants, making it a powerful addition to your home’s HVAC system.

Benefits of UV Light Photo-Catalytic Oxidation

  • Comprehensive Contaminant Removal: Neutralizes bacteria, viruses, mold spores, VOCs, and other harmful pollutants.
  • Relief for Allergy and Asthma Sufferers: Reduces triggers like pet dander, pollen, and dust mites.
  • Odor Elimination: Removes cooking smells, pet odors, smoke, and other lingering scents.
  • Chemical-Free Air Purification: No harsh chemicals or ozone byproducts — just clean, safe air.
  • Low Maintenance: No disposable filters are required; most systems simply need periodic bulb replacement.

Ideal Applications for PCO Systems

UV Light PCO systems can be installed as:

  • Whole-Home Solutions: Integrated into your HVAC system for 24/7 air purification throughout your house.
  • Standalone Units: Targeted systems for bedrooms, offices, or other high-use areas.

Whether in a home, office, school, or healthcare facility, PCO systems provide a proactive approach to improving indoor air quality.

I've been a customer of Rox air for a few years. Both for air and heating but also water heater. I am on there maintenance plan and they come out twice a year and do a thorough job checking out the systems. They spend a lot of time to make sure everything is working right for the next season. I would recommend them to anyone.

Rox Heating replaced my almost 30 year old HVAC with a new heat pump recently. The experience was extremely positive from the very beginning till the job got completed. Scheduling process was hustle free, techs arrived right on time and gave us a heads up call 30 minutes prior to their arrival. They kept us informed on the installation progress, which was great since we were had activities planned that day and had to adjust our schedule. ROX techs gave us a detailed walkthrough on how to use the new heat pump. We really appreciated follow up calls from ROX’s office to make sure that everything was done to our satisfaction. I would definitely recommend ROX Heating and Air to anyone who needs help with any type of HVAC work.
