How to Install a Window Air Conditioning Unit

To install a window air conditioning unit one must first have the proper tools and prepare the unit for installation. Commonly this means a screwdriver, basic pliers and duct tape (optional). Remove the unit from the supplier’s box and remove any packing materials. Remove the front with the filter from the unit and make sure there aren’t any obstructions to the air flow. Leave the front piece containing the filter off and the power cord tied.

Select a window in a central part of the home that has a suitable power outlet nearby. Determine if the unit is 120 or 240 volts. Most are 120v, or a common household outlet. If the unit requires 240v, make sure one is available. If not, additional wiring may be required. Having selected the window, remove and screens, curtains, blinds or other obstructions such that a clear opening is available. There should only be an open window sufficient in height and width for the unit’s dimensions.

Place the unit in the window so that the flange on the front and back of the unit is flush against the bottom of the window. Close the window such that the top flange on the unit is facing towards the room and against the top of the unit. It should be a tight fit and secure. Consult the installation manual to see what angle the unit should be at. It should gradual angle down to the ground so that the condensation can drain rearward outside. If it is angling forward the condensation can build up and leak into the room. If it is angled too much it can cause harm to the compressor. If it is not secure or at the right angle, additional screws or braces may be required.

After it is secure and at the right angle, replace the front screen and filter. Make sure the filter is secure against the front coil and not folded or off-center. Using the screw driver, loosen the screws on the sides to let the sliding side doors cover the areas not covered by the unit. They should fit tightly against the sides of the window such that not open air spaces are present. After the unit’s sliding doors are flush with the sides of the window, tighten the screws to make the doors secure. If one can see daylight, duct tape or weather stripping can be used to make a tight seal. Loosen the power cable and plug it in the power outlet. It should be ready to turn on. Test it at first to make sure it is cooling properly.

I've been a customer of Rox air for a few years. Both for air and heating but also water heater. I am on there maintenance plan and they come out twice a year and do a thorough job checking out the systems. They spend a lot of time to make sure everything is working right for the next season. I would recommend them to anyone.
