Why Is There Ice On My Air Conditioner?

How Air Conditioning Systems Work

Air conditioning plays a vital role in keeping homes cool and comfortable during hot Colorado summers. These systems use a chemical refrigerant to absorb heat from indoor air and release it outside.
Here’s the process in simple terms:

  • The refrigerant evaporates in the evaporator coil, pulling heat from the air inside your home.
  • It then moves to the condenser coil, where it is compressed, releases the absorbed heat, and returns to a liquid state.

When everything functions properly, this cycle cools your home efficiently. However, when something disrupts this process, issues such as ice formation can occur.

Why Ice Forms on an Air Conditioner

Seeing ice on your AC unit can feel confusing. After all, the system’s job is to cool the air, not freeze up. Yet, ice buildup is fairly common and usually points to an underlying problem.
Below are the most common causes.

1. Low Refrigerant Levels

To begin with, low refrigerant is a leading cause of ice buildup.
When refrigerant levels drop too low, the evaporator coil gets colder than it should. As a result, moisture in the surrounding air freezes on the coil, forming a layer of ice that worsens over time.

2. Restricted Airflow

Another common culprit is restricted airflow.
If air cannot flow freely over the evaporator coil, the coil may become too cold, causing condensation to freeze. For example, clogged air filters, blocked vents, or a malfunctioning blower fan often lead to airflow problems.

Steps to Take When You See Ice

Turn Off the AC

First, switch off the air conditioner to let the ice melt. Running the system while frozen can strain the components and cause further damage.

Check and Replace the Air Filter

Next, inspect the air filter.
If it looks dirty or clogged, replace it to restore proper airflow. In many cases, this simple step helps prevent future ice formation.

Call a Professional

Finally, if the problem persists, contact an HVAC professional.
Low refrigerant levels or mechanical issues require expert attention. A certified technician from ROX Heating & Air can accurately diagnose the problem, restore the system’s performance, and prevent future damage.

Risks of Ignoring Ice on Your AC

Delaying repairs can lead to serious consequences.
A frozen air conditioner has to work harder to cool your home, which reduces efficiency, raises energy bills, and increases wear on critical components.
Over time, this extra strain can shorten the system’s lifespan or even cause a complete breakdown.

Rox Heating replaced my almost 30 year old HVAC with a new heat pump recently. The experience was extremely positive from the very beginning till the job got completed. Scheduling process was hustle free, techs arrived right on time and gave us a heads up call 30 minutes prior to their arrival. They kept us informed on the installation progress, which was great since we were had activities planned that day and had to adjust our schedule. ROX techs gave us a detailed walkthrough on how to use the new heat pump. We really appreciated follow up calls from ROX’s office to make sure that everything was done to our satisfaction. I would definitely recommend ROX Heating and Air to anyone who needs help with any type of HVAC work.
